Color theme

High contrast uses a black canvas, white text, stronger borders and yellow focus rings.

Text size

Large raises the base text size by 12.5%. Browser zoom and your system font size still work on top of it.

Motion

Stops decorative animation, smooth scrolling and card movement. If your device asks for reduced motion, ChessUrge follows it automatically.

What each setting does

High-contrast theme

A pure black background with white text, brighter borders, solid header surfaces and yellow interaction colours. Focus rings become yellow and thicker so they never disappear into the page.

Large text

The comfortable setting uses your browser's normal base size. Large raises the root size to 112.5%, so navigation, forms, cards and prose all scale together instead of only enlarging body copy.

Reduced motion

Decorative fades, floating pieces, hover lifts, smooth scrolling and view transitions are removed. The switch follows the prefers-reduced-motion media query, so turning it on at OS level is enough.

Keyboard and focus

Press Tab once after a page loads to reach “Skip to content”. Every link, button, input, select and summary shows a 3px focus ring with a clear offset. The ring follows the element's own shape.

Screen readers

Pages use header, navigation, main and footer landmarks, one main heading, labelled icon buttons and hidden decorative icons. Form fields keep their visible labels, and status messages are announced where the interface provides them.

Colour and clarity

Information is never carried by colour alone: game results, errors and move quality include text labels. High-contrast mode also underlines links in prose and the footer so they are distinguishable without colour.

Known limitations
  • Preferences are stored per browser. They do not sync to your ChessUrge account across devices.
  • High-contrast styling covers ChessUrge's own interface. Third-party frames such as payment or advertising content may not follow it.
  • The internal admin console uses a separate shell and does not include the public skip link.
  • Reduced-motion support depends on the browser honouring the media query and on the page not embedding third-party animation.
